I was really excited to move out on my own. I had never been completely by myself other than a few rare nights when my parents had overnight plans somewhere. I know that it can be a scary thing, but it is also really exciting when you are 23 years old and ready to tackle the world too. I knew that I wanted to look at apartments in Asheville NC rather than houses because I was just not ready to take on that kind of responsibility. Even though I would just be renting, I knew that taking care of a house requires a lot of work, just from watching my parents with their house.
I knew that apartment living would be much better for me, mainly because the one that I ended up liking the most has 24 hour emergency maintenance available. If something were to go wrong like a light not working or a drain clogging up, I would much rather contact the maintenance department than call my dad who would have to travel 40 minutes or worse, a professional who would charge more than I could probably afford.
There are other advantages to having an apartment too, especially for someone my age. I am a very social person, so I like that there are a lot of community things that all of the tenants are allowed to use. That gives me the change to meet my neighbors and hopefully develop some great friendships. I like that there is a pool and fitness center right there, and that the job I had been hired for is only five minutes away. It was still scary in some ways being on my own, but having a gorgeous apartment with lots of things to do right on the grounds definitely has made the transition a lot easier for me.
